Chicago (es mereix un post a part!!)

Després de passar per Cleveland -la ciutat fantasma- vem arribar a Chicago a les 6h00 am del 9/9/2008. No hi ha res millor com trobar un McDonald's obert quan arribes a una ciutat desconeguda. I'm loving it! para-pa-pa-pa. Realment et fa sentir com a casa quan no tens casa.

No tenir cap mena de prejudici quan arribes a un lloc nou és el millor que et pot passar. Per això puc dir sense cap mena d'influencia..que aquesta és la segona ciutat que més em va agradar de tot el viatge. És un lloc per quedar-s'hi a viure, segur i tranquil, modern i original. Amb el seu metro en forma de loop sostingut sobre una estructura de fusta enorme (sembla l'Stampida de Port Aventura). Enlloc he vist tantes botigues d'art, escoles i tallers com a Chicago. Em van agafar unes ganes boges de comprar material i posar-me a pintar!!! També s'ha de dir que hi ha el millor Museu d'Historia Natural del món, ...així com el millor Zoo està San Diego...o això diuen!

El primer que em va cridar l'atenció va ser el tràfic de gent. Potser perquè encara estava adormida, o perquè tenia tot un dia per endavant per descobrir la ciutat i m'ho prenia amb calma, però recordo haver-me sentit desbordada al entrar al metro. Molta més gent que a Times Square!!! Tot d'executius trajats amb el seu cafè a la mà corrents en totes direccions i jo com una formigueta aturada mirant els gratacels plantada al mig del carrer.

Per integrar-nos ràpidament, vem esmorzar a cal Mcdonald's ...després de deixar la pesada bossa de backpackers a les taquilles de l'estació.

Amb el cafè a la mà i una petita bossa de supervivència chic em vaig passejar per la ciutat buscant el daypass. Vem acordar amb l'Edu pujar a la Sears Tower, el 5è edifici més alt del món (els 4 primers estàn a Asia).
Recordo un lleuger mareig al arribar a l'ultim pis per haver pujat l'ascensor tan ràpid. A dins, apretats com sardines ens anavem mirant uns als altres a veure si entrava en pànic algú, ..però no va passar res! Quines vistes més espectaculars!

Després de passar per la biblioteca pública i fer un canvi de roba tipus lluvia de estrellas al lavabo vaig escriure un mail fugaç dient que estava viva (vaig alucinar tant amb el wàter que li vaig fer una foto, tenia un plàstic que corria sol quan aixecaves el cul..^^)
Buscant el barri gay de Chicago vaig anar a parar al barri chino. L'Edu va seguir el seu recorregut d'edificis alts...jo amb un en tenia prou.. després d'haver pujat a tots els de NY. Vaig dinar en un tailandès sospitós amb una especie animal desconeguda com a topping, tenia tanta gana --i l'estómac tan resignat que va entrar molt bé, sense protestar. A l'Edu no li agrada innovar, ..em va dir que va anar a un Pizza Hut, no coments.
Després de passar per Chapters i comprar un altre llibre de filosofia 'Einstein and Buda: parallel thinkings' vaig recórrer totes les botigues de roba del carrer més comercial. Curiosament, des d'aquest viatge sempre m'agafen unes ganes boges de comprar llibres quan arribo a una ciutat. És un problema després decidir si desfer-te'n o quedar-te'l. Tots menys un els vaig anar deixant o perdent pel camí.

Quan les cames ja començaven a flaquejar vaig treure el màxim de rendiment al daypass agafant una vegada i una altre el metro per recórrer el LOOP de fusta. Durant gairebé una hora vaig estar vivint en bucle. Recordo sentir la veu gravada d'una dona per la megafonia del metro dient una vegada i una altre: 'Please stay away from the door. This train is going to..' Vaig pensar que era extremadament exagerat repetir-ho cada mig minut....es va tornar gairebé familiar.D'aquelles coses que fas quan et sobra temps i estàs massa cansada per seguir de peu però no et vols perdre res: agafar el metro en una direcció i en una altre (el metro de Chicago és a l'aire lliure). Vaig pensar: és curiós com canvien les coses quan les mires en un sentit o en un altre.
Vaig trobar-me amb l'Edu davant d'una botiga de còmics. Vem entrar a remenar tot i saber que no podiem dur més pes. Estaven d'oferta i és impossible resistir-se a una botiga de gangues, encara que portis 10kg de pes a l'esquena.

Després vem descobrir l'altre part de la ciutat: el port, la platja, ..i finalment el Museu d'Història Natural. A la plaça de la 'cara' hi havia una projecció sobre una superfície vertical davant d'un llac artificial. La noia del video anava fent expresions i passava per tot d'estats d'ànim diferents: estava trista, decepcionada, pensativa, contenta,alegre, exaltant..vaig esperar que reflexés el meu estat d'ànim per a fer la foto. Aquest és un bon exemple de l'atac massiu de cultura i art que vaig rebre estant en aquesta ciutat. No em volia perdre res!

A poc a poc s'anava fent fosc..
Anavem l'Edu i jo passejant pel carrer quan de sobte vem sentir una olor meravellosa a pastís, ..una olor com a canyella, no se com es diu en català - cinnamon -. Encara quedaven unes quantes hores per agafar el bus, així que vem seguir la olor!

Venia d'un Dunkin Donnuts..^^ Després d'asaltar la botiga vem anar a sopar a la plaça del ovni cafè i donnuts. Si et posaves a sota l'ovni et veies reflectit i deformat, el lloc ideal per fer el gilipolles i riure un rato.

Moments de reflexió, caient la nit a la ciutat de Chicago

Vem descansar una mica i vem posar nota a la ciutat, després de parlar amb un sensesostre sobre la vida i divagar una mica, vem donar-li els donnuts que ens quedaven i vem desfilar cap a l'estació...esperant que el bus anés buit per poder dormir en dos seients i estirar les cames..^^

Acabo d'adonar-me'n que han passat 3 anys des d'aquell meravellós viatge pels EEUU. Continuo tinguen una pila de fotos desordenades en milions de cd's i seria hora de posar una mica d'ordre abans que m'agafi Alzeimer i oblidi qui que com va passar...^^

He estat rumiant en quin idioma hauria d'escriure: ..ara ja no penso en anglès, així que suposo que acabaré fent una barreja..mostra del que tinc pel cap ;p

Ens haviem quedat a Cleveland, dins del post: Philadelphia -Cleveland-Chicago-Kansas City, ..

També havia publicat el video del trajecte nocturn cap a New Orleans.., però ves per on, he perdut el video..oooooooooooh i em portarà força temps saber on para..

Després d'haver recuperat els videos de l'Edu (el meu superacompanyant durant la meitat del viatge) estic en disposició de continuar la publicació del viatge..!!

Aquest era el trajecte previst des d'un principi (aquest mapa cutre imprès del google maps ens va salvar el coll a la frontera de Canadà amb EEUU; no ens deixaven passar perquè pensaven que ens hi quedariem a viure....^^¿¿¿ )

A NewYork vem rebre les 'restes' del Huracan Gustav..i veien lo indefensos que erem davant les condicions meteorològiques poc propicies..vem haver de llençar el mapa a la paperera el primer dia.

00:00 am There are no seats at the NY Bus Station. We spent the time drying the humid socks and charging the camara at the bakery while eating muffins and playing cards. We kept walking and speaking, thinking, dreaming...

The first days that I had to 'wait' I was anxious, constantly looking at the clock, bothered to have so many things to do and being retained somewhere.

I waited so many times that I finally learn to have no hurries, to relax and see the things happen in front of me. (as Alex told me once ..be hakuna matatta)

01:20 am I was singing "..in the streets of Philadelphia.." in Philadelphia while waiting someone to refill the coach of fuel. It's curious how the sence of a place changes when you only see it at night. I can say Philadelphia is black, humid and silent. Even secure, probably because I was expecting to find a suspicious man at the corner, playing with his burner and hiding something in his pocket.

07:05 am Cleveland is a 'ghost city'. Nobody on the streets, no shops, no theatres, no cinemas... a few musical pub's and restaurants. The only thing they have is a fabulous basebol stadium.

Nuria asked us what are you doing in Cleveland?!!..we were in our way to Chicago...but she was right..there's nothing interesting to see.

We got to an ancient bus with a tourist guide driver soul. Speaked about all their interests and took us for a ride for free. He was nice suggesting us not to walk on the streets after 7:00pm, specially hanging that video camara (it looks like a gun).

I have such a confused memory of this city, it must be because I'was unable to understand the Cleveland accent.

Oh! they have a good pizza restaurant at the University Campus, but it's on the dangerouse side...

11:45pm - 7:15am Greyhound Montreal - New York. First problems crossing the border solved. They think everyone want to live in the States, even Canadians, PLEASE! zzzzzzz inside the warm sleeping bag...

The first impression is bad

Looking at the metro map, Grand Central Terminal seems like an important station, near downtown? where is downtown? is there a downtown¿. We buy a day pass ticket and get there. More than 40 degrees while waiting for the subway. Music, lots of people walking somewhere in opposite directions. We leave the heavy bags on the floor and start calling hostels with the cell phone. All booked. All booked. All booked...

A young man asks if we need help. Distrustfully, we say no thanks simultaneously. But it turned to be more than a nice man, helped us with his iphone and get to a mexican hotel under construction.

In two days we go to Central Park, Natural History Museum (I'm sorry for geting sleep at the astronomy documentary, the part that I saw was amazing...), Times Square wih rain, Times Square without rain, Metropolitan Musem of Art (fully steeped for the storm with hurricane included),Empire State Building (I couldn't resist buying the I love NY Tshirt), World Trade Center (I didn't expect a space so huge!), Wall Street, Statue of Liberty..

And walk, walk, walk through Broadway street. Discover THE MacDonalld's breakfast. Keep seeing steam going out of the sewers on the streets. Why? And why they use numbers for the streets. It's imposible not geting lost with that! Lots of spanish speakers everywhere, everywhere. Catalans everywhere. Mira Montse quina camisa més maca, està molt be de preu.

Our next destination is Raleigh, direction Jacksonville, and Miami. We meet Noah again to say thank you and bye. I feel almost american while waching the US Open women's final seated on the floor in a public square, with our brad new friends.

The first opinion has changed radically for good. After crossing borders more than five times you realize all the workers on the borders are ..., but not the country residents. NewYorkers are polite, intelligent, respectful, ...and from all over the world!!

11:00pm We are suddenly discussing our next destination. Why? With the help of Noah and his iphone we see the situation on the south is getting worse. We will not be able to bear a bad wheather like this again. Walking 6 hours with the socks steeped. With the map and the umbrella in one hand and the camera in the other.

11:30pm We go pick up the bags at the hotel and decide in front of the panel destinations our new destination..direction west, instead of south. Will there be buses going out tonight?

Beautiful, genuine, friendly, peaceful, harmonious, generous, responsible, educated, altruistic, respectful..... is Canada.

I spend the first days in Ottawa with my family. Then I moved to Montreal where I met nice people like Elad, Shawn, Tania, Diane, Rachel and the nice girls that play at Lafontaine Park. :)

It took us more than a week choosing the route. We wanted to see the most beautiful cities on the States, but also the most beautiful National Parks...

all journeys begin with a single step

There is nothing more interesting that what you haven't seen. Curiosity made me give up my work, forget about finding another one and start to plan this trip.

It starts in Ottawa. A place where I have been before, where I feel fully comfortable, specially happy and free. I always wanted to do it alone. Autistic for ones and brave for others I end up finding someone that understand me and followed me to the middle of nowhere, Banff. There we took different ways. But I'll explain the journey form the start 'cause the first days where crucial to reach the summit. :)

It's true that planning is almost as fun as the trip itself, but there is nothing more rewarding than the surprises you take along the way.

I've found a nice comercial that conveys perfectly the meaning of a journey, here it comes:
